Every cocktail is a story

A popular story behind the cocktail name refers to a rooster's tail (or cock tail) being used as a Colonial drink garnish. There are no formal references in written recipes to such a garnish.
In the story  "The Spy," by James Fenimore Cooper, the character Betty Flanagan invents the cocktail during the Revolution.  The British publication, Bartender, published a story in 1936 of English sailors, of decades before, being served mixed drinks in Mexico. The drinks were stirred with a Cola de Gallo (cock's tail), a long root of similar shape to the bird's tail.

It all started with the Shandy. There have been many different iterations of the Shandy over time and across a vast spectrum of cultural groups. To Kevin, growing up in the mid-west, the

Shandy represented Summer time, easy drinking, light

beer with lemonade. So when we opened the Annex, he

wanted to keep this nostalgic tradition going. What really

makes the Annex Shandy our own is the fact that we add

1oz of Vodka to it. Our reasoning is that if we’re taking

beer out of your glass to add the fresh squeezed lemonade,

then we damn well better make up for it by adding some

vodka. Some call it the turbo Shandy; all call it delicious

and refreshing.

The Manhattan was created in the 1870’s at the Manhattan Club in New York, at a banquet held by Winston Churchill’s mother for the Democratic Presidential candidate, Samuel J. Tilden.

                            In it’s truest form, the Manhattan consists of

                            whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, with a

                            cherry garnish. However, Winston Churchill

                            quickly found that he preferred what came to

                            be known as the “Perfect” style of Manhattan,

                            splitting the sweet vermouth in half with an

                            equal portion of dry vermouth, making for a

                            very smooth, balanced flavor. We took this and ran with it, replacing the traditional Angostura bitters with a light and slightly sweet Blood Orange bitters, and then really pulling the citrus out of the whiskey and bitters with a beautiful lemon twist to garnish. Many have called the Churchill Manhattan the best Manhattan in Arizona…we tend to agree.

Over the past 150 years, the Old Fashioned has been through about 5 different iterations. We, personally, like to order an Old Fashioned first at any new bar, as a sort of test of the Bartender. If they make a proper Old Fashioned, no matter what their style, or twist on it

may be, then we will delve further into their cocktail

portfolio. Our Ol’ Fashioned, as we like to spell it, is big

and bold, with lots of spice from the Rye whiskey and

Angostura, but a soothing and palatable slightly sweet

and citrusy finish from the raw demerara sugar (from

Guiana) and fresh orange rind. Hands down, it is the

best in town.

This playful twist on the Boulevardier cocktail gets its name from the Street on which the Annex is located. The literal translation of Boulevardier is “one who frequents the boulevards,” meaning a generally cultured and sophisticated person. Traditionally this cocktail consists of equal parts Rye whiskey, Sweet Vermouth, and Campari, for a very dry, spicy, but balanced cocktail. At the Annex, we chose to replace the bitter Campari with a much more sweet, cherry and vanilla forward Italian Aperitif known as Cappelletti. We also found that a few dashes of Orange Peel bitters help to really brighten up the flavor profile, as well as lend some complimentary depth to the Templeton Rye whiskey that we use as the base spirit. Also, our love affair with Rye whiskey in general leads us to really illuminate the star of the show. Therefore, we add an extra half-ounce to really make this cocktail pop. This one is perfect after a nice big meal, or simply as an immensely satisfying nightcap.

The Turmeric Tonic is the essence of a “Concept Cocktail." 

We wanted to incorporate the anti-inflammatory,

anti-oxidant, digestive boosting powerhouse that is Turmeric,

into a cocktail that is both delicious, and healthy. So, we took

fresh Turmeric root, sliced it very thin using a mandolin, and

infused it into our house London Dry gin. From there,

we added Cynar, a bitter and vegetal Artichoke liqueur,

fresh carrot juice, lemon, ginger, a dash of soda water for effervescence, and a sprig of rosemary for an earthy,

herbaceous garnish. The result was incredible. We like to tell customers, “Seven Turmeric Tonics a day will keep the

Doctor away!”

Named, of course, after the famous song and innuendo, the Afternoon Delight is a tried and true crowd pleaser. Light, refreshing, easy going, not too sweet, and practically drinkable by pitcher, the Afternoon Delight has it all. The Dry Gin and Wild Elderflower liqueur blend together to create a floral bouquet,

mixed with the tart acidity of fresh squeezed lime and

ruby red grapefruit juices, and a cool, melon-like finish

of the muddled cucumber round out the gorgeous flavor

profile. Try one, and you’ll be addicted.
